Ignatieff mistakes abortion for healthcare

Catholic Insight Press Release

Here is the preface to a press release from Catholic Insight, written by Father de Valk:
February 10, 2010

Dear Friends,

Once again, Canada’s Liberal Party leader is striking a blow for the pro-death cause. In response, we have issued a press release, the text of which is below.

May I remind those of you who live in the Toronto Centre riding that the provincial Liberal candidate for the by-election there is Glen Murray, former mayor of Winnipeg and a homosexual activist.  Please do not vote for him, but rather for the Tory candidate.

Best wishes,
Father de Valk

The following is the Press Release:
In urging Prime Minister Stephen Harper to make abortion and contraception part of a G8 plan to improve the lot of women worldwide, Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff is mistaking the killing of preborn human beings for healthcare, says the editor of Canada’s national Catholic magazine of news, analysis and opinion. Father Alphonse de Valk of Catholic Insight magazine notes this is the second time Ignatieff has called for the killing of unborn children, foolishly believing it is a solution for women’s happiness. Furthermore, it is the second time he has done so without consulting his caucus or his party.

The first time was on May 13, 2009, when he issued a statement saying, “It is the longstanding view of the Liberal Party of Canada that women must have the right to choose (abortion).” Ignatieff has spoken of “safe medical services” (May 19, 2009) and of “child health care” (Feb. 2, 2010). De Valk responds, “Abortion is not health care. Abortion does not heal; it kills the child, alienates the father and hurts the mother, spiritually and physically.”

The Canadian Press has quoted Liberal MP Paul Szabo (Mississauga South) as saying the abortion matter was not discussed at any Liberal caucus meeting. He told LifeSiteNews.com: “I am a pro-life MP and there are many of my colleagues in the Liberal caucus who will protect the unborn as Parliamentarians.”

Catholic Insight is calling on Liberal MPs to reject Ignatieff’s claim to speak for the party unilaterally. If his claim stands, many Catholics and other pro-life Canadians will not vote Liberal in a coming election. De Valk reminds Catholics that to be anti-life disqualifies a candidate from holding political office.

Catholic Insight magazine is a journal of opinion, news, and analysis. Within the English-speaking community of Canadian Catholics, it provides a forum for discussing political, social, economic and cultural aspects of the Catholic church in Canada and the world at large.
In my lifetime, I have been a Liberal party supporter, and declined an offer to run for the nomination in the Toronto riding that I worked in back in the 70's.  I have long since lost faith in what was the party of the people.

I also went to school with Pat O'Brien, who was the outspoken pro-life MP from London for many years, and has since retired.  He and I both attended King's College with Paul Szabo, the now plain speaking pro-life MP from Mississauga.  If I had to choose someone who could be a voice for the real truth of the Liberal party, I would choose either of those two men over Iggy.

Iggy needs to go back to Harvard, where his liberal tripe might play better.  He is out of touch with Canadians.

Bravo Father de Valk
