Sure Could Use A Little Good News Today

Well Anne, We Have Ezra Levant and Mark Steyn on the Hill on Monday

Man the lifeboats. The real Jew and the guy with the Jewlike name are on the Hill on Monday at the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights. They will be testifying between 3:30 and 4:30. Apparently it is televised, presumably on CPAC, though the Comedy Network would have been a good place for it.

Read more at cbc.ca here.

This is a good thing. CBC reports as follows:
On Monday, the committee will hear from both Steyn and Ezra Levant, who know what it's like to fight a human rights complaint over their journalism. Jennifer Lynch, the Chief Commissioner for the Canadian Human Rights Commission, is also expected to be called before the committee.
I am mistaken. J Ly should be on Comedy Network. Can't wait. Get your PVR's ready folks.

Access Is A Right

Barb Hall Says So

The Thunder Bay Chronicle chronicles more of Barb's thunder by the Bay. You gotta stop giving this lady a stage, folks. Of course in this instance she was playing to the crowd as a guest speaker at the Recreation-Able Inclusive Recreation Forum in Thunder Bay.

Herself had this to say, while tooting her own horn:
“Many restaurants in Ontario have been made accessible because people have filed complaints and they have complied voluntarily or have been ordered by tribunals to do that,” said Barbara Hall.

Hall said the Human Rights Code should not be confused with the AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with a Disability Act).

The code deals with individual discrimination while the AODA is about transforming the whole province.

“There may be a whole pile of restaurants in Ontario that no one in a wheelchair has ever gone to,” said Hall.
As a brain injured individual, I am largely unable to go to places where there is a lot of noise. So, about once every year or two I suck it up and go anyway. Then I pay for it for the next few days. I attended one Memorial Cup game to see Sid the Kid in London a few years ago, and will attend a Raptors exhibition game next week, because my dear wife bought us tickets. So, if I were to complain to Barb that I am unable to do things and go to places that I formerly enjoyed because of my disability, like sporting events, maybe she could make them accessible for me.

For example, take a basketball game. That would require that fans show their appreciation or derision quietly, and that refs use hand signals instead of whistles. So, if she could muzzle the fans, and quiet the refs, that would help. Then if she could make the players wear non squeaky shoes, and wave their arms quietly when they want a pass, that would be good too. Cut out the music and the fireworks. Dance Pack has to go at Raptors games. This should be made into HRC policy for all basketball games in all venues, down to grade school, in case there is somebody like me at some grade school in Kenora, or Horne Payne.

Pretty much the same for hockey. The wave has to go, unless it can be done quietly, as it makes me seasick, when accompanied by noise. And slap shots would have to be outlawed because they are too noisy. Ditto for wooden boards. Maybe they could be made of Styrofoam or marshmallows, and the loud plink when a puck hits the pipes of the net is bothersome too. Fix that also. Pucks should probably be made of sponge rubber to deaden the sound. This needs to go all the way down to Tim Horton league hockey. Get 'em started young so that my rights and the rights of the other 4 or 5 folks like me in Ontario are preserved. I do have rights, you know.

As for football, You can probably use most of the above, tuned to football. And other sports should not be immune, including badminton. Ever heard how loud the bird being thwacked by a racket is?

While you are at it, Barb, I used to be a musician, and had extensive training and experience in keyboards and guitar, but am no longer able to play, due to the frequency of the sound and how it hurts my head as it arrives there. So, the age old tuning of A 440 hz might have to change. But, since you know all and see all, you can figure it out. Since I have always enjoyed music and was good at it prior to my disability, I HAVE A RIGHT to enjoy music again, even if nobody else on the planet will be able to after you fix it for me.

On second thought, I am okay with things the way they are. I enjoy my life, even though it is different than it was before. I don't do some things I used to enjoy.

I can't go to many restaurants because they are too noisy for me, as well. So what!!

Does anybody out there think that much of this nonsense is way OUT THERE?

S. 13 Up for Judicial Review

What's the Surprise?

OK. S. 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act is lousy law. So are its ugly fraternal sisters in Alberta (S. 3(1) Alberta HRCM Act) and other provinces. Who in their right mind thought this thing was just going to go away?

Anyway Jay Currie has words of wisdom for starters.

I clearly get the logic of using the Taylor decision against the actions of the CHRC and their manipulation of the law over the years, especially considering the very valid dissenting opinion penned by the now Chief Justice of the Supremes. That dissenting opinion was a nice piece in the Boissoin Appeal, which I wrote about a while back.

What I don't understand is why nobody has attacked the subjective "likely to expose to hatred or contempt" phrase. In all the cases I have seen, I have never found any reference to an objective test of "likely to expose to hatred or contempt", which means that the phrase is whimsical. There is no test, because there can be no test. If you can't test it you can't prove it. To paraphrase Johnny Cochrane, "If the test don't fit, you must acquit."

Follow that up with testimony that we have all heard and read that the truth is not a valid defence in Section 13 cases, and I have to shake my head in amazement.

I hear the death rattle, but it is still very faint.

Archbishop Lahey

Judge Not Lest You Be Judged

I am not trying to condone what Archbishop Lahey might or might not have done, as reported yesterday at cbc.ca. I hope that if he has been involved in "possession of child pornography and importation of child pornography" as he has been charged, that he will personally repent of the sinfulness involved in it, and that the court system will treat him as it would any other offender.

At a time when the Catholic Church has had more than its fair share of scandal in North America, it is a sad day to see one of its archbishops in this position.

My mother in law asked me yesterday what I thought about what was going on with the bishop from down east. At the time, I had little to say, other than that we do not know all the facts, but I have had time to think and pray about it, and observe some other things.

For example, he surrendered in Ottawa yesterday, and was bailed out. Well, yesterday, October 1 was the feast day of St. Therese of Lisieux, the Little Flower of Jesus, of which I was reminded as my wife and I did our Daily Catholic Devotion reading last evening before bed. St. Therese, who died in 1897 at the age of 24, is considered a Doctor of the Catholic Church, and is known for her "Little Way", as she wrote:
"Love proves itself by deeds, so how am I to show my love? Great deeds are forbidden me. The only way I can prove my love is by scattering flowers and these flowers are every little sacrifice, every glance and word, and the doing of the least actions for love."
As a Catholic one of my beliefs is in the intercessory power of the saints on our behalf, the cloud of witnesses of Hebrews 12:1. We believe that those who have gone before and now reside in the midst of God's glory are able to intercede on our behalf with Him for our needs and the needs of others.

St. Therese came to me on at least one occasion many years ago. She is called the Little Flower of Jesus because sometimes she makes her presence known with the fragrance of roses. I was travelling with my family and was in Hagersville MD over night on the way to Virginia. We arrived in mid afternoon, and I was overwhelmed by the need to go to confession. I did not know Hagersville, never been there before or since, and had no idea where a Catholic Church was. However, I left my family poolside and headed out to find the Church. In short order I found it where most old Catholic Churches are, on the top of a hill overlooking the city. I arrived shortly before confessions ended, and was able to make my confession.

As I drove away, down a residential street, I suddenly noticed a fragrant smell of roses. After it disappeared, I turned around and went looking for what I thought was a house that must have had rose bushes. In a minute or two, I realised that there was no house with rose bushes, and that I had been visited by St. Therese. That was my personal introduction to her, so now I speak to her from time to time.

This morning I asked her to intercede with Our Loving Father on behalf of Archbishop Lahey to bring repentance and healing to him.

This may be a circumstance where the scripture "Be sure your sin will find you out," (NB 32:23) proves to be true. But, for all of us our sin finds us out in ways that might be less dramatic. I do not know Archbishop Lahey, and do not wish to judge him, because I know that whatever his sin is, I too am every bit a sinner, in need of God's mercy, and thankful that God's justice is mercy.

Pray for him, and for the people of the Antigonish Diocese at this time of sorrow, and confusion.

Racial Profiling An American Perspective

American Renaissance Speaks Out

American Renaissance is a US group that focuses on what they call race realism. Here is how they describe themselves:

Race is an important aspect of individual and group identity. Of all the fault lines that divide society — language, religion, class, ideology — it is the most prominent and divisive. Race and racial conflict are at the heart of the most serious challenges the Western World faces in the 21st century.

The problems of race cannot be solved without adequate understanding. Attempts to gloss over the significance of race or even to deny its reality only make problems worse. Progress requires the study of all aspects of race, whether historical, cultural, or biological. This approach is known as race realism.

They reproduced a Toronto Star article from the 30th of September 2009 titled "Racial Bias Exists on Police Force, Chief Says". The whole thing of harping on police officers for racial profiling is so repulsive and left wing to me that it makes me almost ill, so I had paid the original article little heed. I am reminded of how Constable Michael Shaw got his ashes hauled by the jerks at the Ontario HRT while we all stood back and said very little. Well, I have had a lot to say, and I meant every word of it. I am so sick and tired of the liberal BS that is behind our so called human rights, and the rhetoric and gestapo tactics being used in this province by Barb Hall and her minions that I want to scream.

This was just one other example of it. But, I did not have to say a word. I can just cut and paste the comments from Americans who are just as intelligent as we are and know a real human right when they see one, and want to see Truth prevail.

Here is a good comment:

“Our responsibility as police officers is not just safe communities. We have a role in social justice as well,” said Blair.

Wrong, Chief Blair, entirely wrong. Please stop with the “social justice” claptrap. Just get the bad people (and you know as well as I do who they are) off the streets of my city. Please. That’s all that normal, law-abiding Torontonians want you to do. Oh, and don’t discriminate against white male applicants while you’re at it.

It’s bad enough when your school system or your city hall gets taken over by diversity loonies — but when your Chief of Police starts talking like a guilt-ridden social worker in a fuzzy cardigan and a “Save the Whales” button, I figure it’s really time to worry.

How many good police officers will get screwed over in this politically correct amuck running?

Deborah Gyapong Again

What A Heart She Has For Christ

She too has been following the hurtful back and forth about the D&P issues and the Kennedy funeral (When will that guy be dead and buried?). As well, she has read what Archbishop Burke has had to say, and has spoke from her own heart. The conclusion to her essay is so poignant to me and maybe to us all:
We just all be careful we don't take it upon ourselves to do the convicting work of the Holy Spirit. We can get in the way and end up really pointing the finger of the Accuser.

The Holy Spirit convicts and convicts powerfully in circumstances where a Christian forgives on the spot, or "covers" the sin of an another with prayer and silence and lots of hidden intercessory prayer. Imagine the difference in the Parable of the Prodigal Son, if the Father had come out and said, "You squandered my inheritance, blah blah" to make sure the son got the message that he had wronged his father before he ordered the fatted calf to be killed. The elder brother might have liked that approach, no? How much more was the son's heart broken by his father's undeserved abundant love. He really got the message of how much he had wronged his loving father then.

None of us deserves Christ's love and for some of us, who know in our depths how guilty we are, it is the hardest, most humbling thing in the world to accept. Jesus' love breaks pride, every shred of it.

The biggest changes in my life have come from people who have loved me with a Christlike love, who have treated me with patience and grace when I deserved to have them come down on me like a ton of bricks. The Holy Spirit convicted me because they did not step into His way to do it themselves.

Yes, sometimes we do have to speak up. Sometimes the words might well up in us the way they did in Jeremiah, like fire in our bones, so that we must speak.

But before you do, make sure you recognize that you have been forgiven much and that you love much to the point of tears before you do.
Preach it Sister.

More Pro-Choice Drivel

My BS Meter Is Tingling

No Apologies reports on some writing from the McGill Tribune by a Pro-Choice historical revisionist.

The problem I see is that people believe this trash and then operate in it. At least the folks over at No Apologies take a stand against it. I hope you will read what they have to say. I have skipped the revisionist history part but here is what No Apologies had to say:
(The writer) goes on to outline the basic premise of the pro-choice argument, noting: “At its most basic, ‘the right to choose’ means respect and bodily sovereignty: each individual person defines and makes decisions for their own body. These decisions are made according to their own understanding of their body, morality, and reality. Furthermore, the appropriate context for these decisions is a personal and community framework, as opposed to a moral or legal code.” What Vashist refuses to acknowledge, both in her historical survey of abortion and arguments supporting the procedure, is that the pro-life debate transcends the right of a woman to choose. The rights of other family members (both men and women), and more importantly, unborn children (both male and female) need to be taken into account. Vashist also refuses to acknowledge the pro-choice movement today appears more indebted to latent racism and contemporary Western colonialism in deciding which children should be aborted than the pro-life movement.

Human Right to Give Blood?

Fortunately He Didn't Go to Barb

National Post Editorial Board reports the story of Kyle Freeman here. Mr. Freeman, apparently a gay man lied to Canadian Blood Services when answering questions prior to giving blood, and then fessed up about it. They sued him for $10,000, but he is making a constitutional challenge that it is his human right to give blood, questions be damned.

Just read it. It makes me sick thinking about this kind of insanity.

The good news is that he went to a real court and not a Kangaroo Court.

Archbishop Burke Stirred Something in Me

Dear Gentle Reader:

Reading the article in Inside Catholic by Archbishop Raymond Burke stirred something in me that I have thought about often, and though I have intended to write it, have put off doing so for reasons that I do not know. Maybe, I am afraid that when you read what I write below, you will consign me to the looney bin, along with the NDP hopeful in Manitoba I wrote about the other day, after you dismiss what I write as pure lunacy. However, what follows is as it relates to my personal life, a very true story. As it relates to Pope Leo XIII, I believe in its veracity because of my own personal story.

First, My Own Story

In brief, I was raised in the Catholic Church, and as a late teenager left, when it was no longer "relevant" to me. As Kathy Shaidle has said for herself, I at a later date became a "relapsed" Catholic, and returned to the Church at about age 31, after I very clearly heard a voice that, to me, was certainly the Voice of God saying only 3 words to me and my wife in our kitchen one afternoon: "Go to Church."

A few years later, I became involved with the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, and fell in love with God. I was becoming active in the Church and learning about my faith, and talking about my faith.

My wife, at the time, and I, along with our 3 young daughters (about 5, 3,and 1 years of age) went to visit her family in Albany New York one summer, with plans to then go on for a few days to Vermont, where we went skiing with the kids in winter.

As we travelled north on the Vermont interstate in our van, I became aware that my wife and all 3 of the children had suddenly become quiet, and fallen asleep. We had gone from talking and laughing to a dead silence in moments. That unnerved me far less than what happened next.

After noticing that all about me were asleep, suddenly, I heard a voice that I knew to be the Archangel Michael, and what he said is indelibly etched on my mind and heart to this day. He said: "Satan has asked for permission to sift you and your family, and God has granted it to him."

If the car was quiet before that, it was tomb like after, for some miles. To say that I was shaken by the experience would be an understatement. I had no choice but to pray as I drove, and to try and make some sense out of what I had just heard.

Eventually, my wife and daughters awoke, and things returned to normal for them. For me, not so much. We came to the foot of Madonna Mountain in Vermont, where the von Trappe's lived. We found a cabin there, and after dinner bunked in for the night.

When I was taking my two oldest daughters down the hall to their bedroom to read them a story and put them to bed that evening, the oldest stopped in her tracks at the doorway. She pointed at the bed, and said: "Daddy, there's a bad man sitting on the bed." In my spirit, I knew that it was the devil, and I prayed in tongues trusting that it was a prayer to make him leave. A few moments later, she told me that he was gone, and then she was prepared to proceed in to the room. I read them stories, and they went off to the sleep that young children can enter into. Me, a father, after the experience of the day thus far, sleep was not going to be so deep.

After our 1 year old was settled in her crib, my wife and I went to bed. We left a window at the end of the bed open a few inches to let in some fresh air, and settled in to sleep. In the middle of the night, I was startled awake. It was as though the moonlight that had been shining in through the partially opened window was sucked out of the room. There at the end of the bed, was the darkest, most evil presence that I had ever encountered in my life. I have never felt such a presence before or after, and am in no need of feeling it again. For some reason, I was aware of the scripture verse: "Resist the devil and he will flee from you." I sat bolt upright and prayed in tongues. After a few moments, he disappeared, and light returned to the room through the open window. I fell back asleep. Two more times this happened that night, and I responded the same way.

In the ensuing years, my marriage disintegrated, not without help from both me and my wife. The business that we had owned fell apart, again not without our help, as we worked together in it. I have no doubt that the devil had a hand in what occurred, but I had 2 hands, 2 feet, and the rest of my body, and mind in it myself. Is the sifting of my family over? I don't know.

Pope Leo XIII

Pope Leo was Catholic Pope from 1878 to 1903, third longest reign for any pope.

In 1884, or thereabouts he had an experience that has been kept from most people since it occurred. I came across it years ago, and found it again in several places, but picked it up here because of how it was dealt with from a Church teaching standpoint. Here is the nub of the story:

In 1884, after saying mass on the morning of, according to at least one source, October 13th, as he was leaving the Altar, the 74 year old and frail Pope Leo XIII fell to the ground as if dead. One version has it that those around him thought for a few moments that he may have passed away. According to this version, a few minutes later, his breathing returned to normal and he revived.

Another version has it that as he was leaving the altar after a weekday low Mass, he paused as if in a trance for about 10 minutes, turning ashen white. And yet another states that Pope Leo went into this trance while kneeling in attendance of a mass of thanksgiving after his own Mass that morning. See Appendix II for sources of written documentation on this subject.

The Pope, according to the most common and popular version, related that he had experienced a sort of vision, in which he heard two voices, one of which he took to be that of Christ, gentle and kind, and the other that of Satan, guttural and harsh.

Satan said, “I could destroy Your Church if I had the time, and more power over those who give themselves over to my service.” And then Pope Leo heard Christ to answer, “You have the power, you have the time: 100 years.”
Lest you be too troubled by what you have read, gentle reader, I offer you another important bit from the same report as the Pope's vision:

The general rule of the Catholic Church is to flee from unapproved private visions and private prophecies as if from temptation, to paraphrase St. John of the Cross.

However, certain private prophecies or visions from recognized holy persons or saints have been recognized by the Church in one way or another as “worthy of belief.” This does not mean that these private prophecies are binding on anyone’s faith, as are the public revelations which come from the Old Testament and the New Testament up until the death of the Last Apostle, St. John, in 91 A.D.
What happened to me and subsequently to my family, in large part through our own actions and inactions is a personal story. It is not a matter of faith whether you believe it or not. The same is ultimately true about the Pope's reported vision.

But, I have written this piece because I have seen the world we live in through eyes that are somewhat formed through things that have happened to me, and what I reported above is one of the more significant things that has occurred in my life.

It is because I believe that the devil is very active and alive in our times, that I have written this. I believe the words of 1 Peter 5:8: "Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."

So, when I read the words of Archbishop Burke that I wrote about yesterday, I want to absorb them and understand them and let them form my conscience, so that as more trials come in this world I can respond better to them, and continue to grow as a better example to my wife and children.
